Navy Seizes Two Foreign Ships in Riau
Jakarta. The Western Fleet Command seized two foreign ships bearing Fiji's national flag at Cape Uma in the Riau Islands on Sunday (23/04).
The mini tankers Brama and Orca entered Indonesian waters over the weekend with no prior clearance from authorities to dock at any of the ports located across the archipelago.
Western Fleet Naval Command Rear Adm. Aan Kurnia said the two ships might have been fleeing Malaysia for violating its maritime laws.
"We have been working with international maritime security forces, including with Malaysia. There have been reports of ships fleeing Malaysian waters, so we coordinated with [Malaysian authorities] to seize the illegal ships," Aan said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
However, the rear admiral did not reveal what cargo the Brama and Orca were hauling when the ships were seized at Cape Uma.
The Navy has yet to announce what punitive measures they will take, if at all.
"Clearly, both ships did not possess proper documentation. […] Both the Indonesian Navy and the Malaysian Navy are working to resolve this matter," Aan said.
