Jakarta. House of Representatives Speaker Setya Novanto complimented Indonesia's badminton players Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, who recently won the 2017 World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and promised a place for top-performing athletes in the future to be hired as government employees.
Mixed doubles pair Tontowi and Liliyana beat world number one Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen of China on Sunday (27/08) to claim the world title for the second time. The Indonesian pair won the same medal in 2013.
"I'm very proud of their win. Tontowi and Liliyana have presented a priceless gift to the nation," Setya said on Thursday.
According to Setya, people must give credit to the Indonesian Badminton Federation, or PBSI, who have made everything possible for the pair to clinch victory in Glasgow.
In addition, he promised that the House will provide more support to help Indonesian athletes gain more recognition at international events. As a concrete step, the budget for sports might be increased from Rp 3 trillion ($224 million) in 2017 to Rp 4 trillion next year.
The speaker also promised to fight to give top-tier athletes chances to work at government institutions after their retirement.
"One another strategy is to hire top athletes as government employees [after they have retired]."
