Indonesia Seeks Universities' Support to Win More Medals at 2018 Asian Games
Jakarta. Vice President Jusuf Kalla, as head of the 2018 Asian Games steering committee, met at his office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (29/03) with representatives of public universities that excel in sports to explore possibilities for them to use scientific methods to help the Indonesian contingent win more medals.
Attending the meeting were Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, head of Indonesia's High-Performance Sports task force (Satlak Prima) Ahmad Soetjipto, Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) chairman Tono Suratman, University of Indonesia rector Muhammad Anis, Jakarta State University rector Djaali and Indonesia University of Education rector Furqon.
"Vice President Kalla gathered us to ask which facilities and elements can get Indonesia the most medals in the Asian Games," Minister Imam said after the meeting. "It's obvious that science and technology play significant roles in high performance sports these days."
"After this meeting, we'll form a special team to support this purpose and Satlak Prima," Imam continued.
The three universities are deemed having the best sports facilities in the country, with athletes affiliated with them having won many medals, both at local and international competitions.
"We've indeed provided many athletes and coaches before to both Satlak Prima and Indonesia, so we'll optimize what we have to support Indonesia to win as many medals as possible [at the Asian Games]," rector Djaali said.
"Universities are places where sports science is developed," he added.
