Indonesia Wins Gold in Weightlifting at 2018 Asian Games

Jakarta. Eko Yuli Irawan, 29, won for Indonesia a gold medal in the 62-kilogram men's weightlifting competition at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/08).

Eko lifted 311 kilograms — 141 kilograms in the snatch and 170 kilograms in the clean-and-jerk. He was 12 kilograms above Vietnamese Trinh Van Vinh. Uzbekistan's Adkhamjon Ergashev was third, having lifted 298 kilograms.

"This win is for Indonesia," Eko said, as quoted by Antara news agency. He could not hold tears when the national anthem was played.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo was watching the competition at its venue and presented medals to the winners.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Indonesia was fourth in the medal tally with five golds, two silvers and five bronzes. The Indonesian team's target is to rank in the top 10 with 16 gold medals.

Indonesia's first gold came from Defia Rosmaniar in taekwondo, second from Lindswell Kwok in wushu, and two more from Tiara Andini Pastika and Khoiful Mukhib in mountain biking.

"The victory of Eko Yuli Irawan makes Indonesia hopeful of achieving the top 10 target in the Asian Games," Syafruddin, who leads the Indonesian team, said in a statement on Tuesday. He added that the gold medal was expected from Eko.
