Australian Man Behind the Film 'Lion' to Attend Festival in Indonesia
Jakarta. The true life story of Saroo Brierley, an Indian-born Australian, has been adapted into a film titled "Lion," and will be featured at the Australian Indonesian Cinema Festival in Makassar and Jakarta on Jan. 28-29.
Brierley, the author of a 2012 memoir "A Long Way Home," was separated from his birth mother on a train trip to Calcutta when he was 5-years-old, and was later adopted by an Australian couple. His autobiography is the main source for the Garth Davis movie starring Dev Patel as Brierley and Nicole Kidman as his adoptive mother.
The 35-year old grew up in Hobart, Tasmania, and only met his Indian family in 2012 after a painstaking search using Google Earth. Brierley told BBC he did not remember the name of his home town, but recognized the topography of the rail station on Google Earth.
Brierley is scheduled to attend a question and answer session after the screening of "Lion" at Trans Studio XXI in Makassar, South Sulawesi on Jan. 28. He will also be at Senayan City XXI in South Jakarta on Jan. 29
"Lion" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 10, 2016, and became the first runner up for the festival's People Choice award. The drama received four Golden Globe nominations for best drama, best supporting actor for Patel, best supporting actress for Kidman and best original score.
The movie will screen in Indonesian theaters by the end of January.
