Europe on Screen Returns With Oscar-Nominated 'The Breadwinner' and Ingmar Bergman
Jakarta. When it comes to filmmaking, Europe’s contribution to world cinema is definitely unique. From May 3 to 12, selected films from Europe will be screened in six cities in Indonesia as part of the Europe on Screen festival.
"We hope the festival can broaden people's perspective of what European cinema is all about. European cinema is rich, diverse and definitely eye-and-mind opening," said Nauval Yazid, co-director of EoS 2018.
The longest-running international film festival in Indonesia, EoS returns this year with a fantastic collection of films at venues in Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, Denpasar, Surabaya and Yogyakarta.
With a total of 92 films and 200 screenings, there's bound to be a movie for everyone. Even better, all screenings are open to the public and free.
New and Classic Lineup
The festival will open with Oscar-nominated animation "The Breadwinner" about a girl growing up in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
It will close with "My Big Night," a blockbuster comedy from Spain.
There is a focus on the environment, with a series of documentaries presented under the series #OurOcean. The aim is to encourage the public to take part in protecting the world’s oceans.
"We hope the programme will increase awareness of the impact that our daily choices have on our planet’s blue lungs," said Vincent Guérend, the European Union Ambassador for Indonesia.
There will also be an in-depth look at the works of legendary Swedish director the late Ingmar Bergman.
"We will screen three of his classic films that have been digitally restored: 'Autumn Sonata,' 'The Seventh Seal' and 'Wild Strawberries.' Never-before-seen archival interviews with Bergman will also be added in each film," Nauval said.
As an additional treat, two films will be shown before the official screenings in cinemas. These are "Submergence" by German director Wim Wenders and "Based on a True Story" by Roman Polanski.
EoS will also invite several top European filmmakers to Indonesia, including "Long Way" director Weronika Mliczewska and "Bugs" director Andreas Johnsen.
A special program called "Film Talk: The Art of Subtitling" will also be held at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara on May 7.
Nauval hopes EoS this year will attract more young people. They expect a total crowd of around 20,000, on par with last year.
