Guide to Java Jazz Festival Day 1: Robin Thicke, Level 42, Glenn Fredly
Jakarta. Music fans will make the trek to Jakarta International Expo Kemayoran in Central Jakarta this evening as the 2016 Java Jazz Festival opens today (04/03).
Kickstarting the festival at 4.30 p.m. inside the Transcorp Hall — one of the 11 stages at the venue — will be the New West Guitar Group. The troika of American guitarists — Perry Smith, John Storie and Will Brahm — will serve a riveting amuse bouche for the upcoming long night with their performance of classic pop covers, jazz standards as well as original arrangements.
Show-tunes fans will enjoy the "Jazz on Broadway" show at 5.15 p.m. inside the Java Jazz Hall, where Indonesian singers Lea Simanjuntak, Aimee Saras and Andrea Miranda will deliver jazz rendition of popular Broadway numbers. More into film soundtracks? Raisa will sing her favorite ones at 6 a.m. on the BNI Hall stage.
Grab a quick dinner — and hop from one stage to another to sample performances by such local acts as Tomorrow People Ensemble, Tohpati Ethnomission and Naif — before the night's major shows.
At 8.30 p.m., Robin Thicke will get the temperature rising inside the BNI Hall with some of his biggest hits — expect "Blurred Lines," "Lost Without U" and his most recent single, "Back Together."
If you want to experience something different, sneak out to MLDSPOT Hall at 9.15 p.m. to catch Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. The energetic Japanese group will play stomping ska tunes that will beg you to leave that phone in your pocket and just dance along.
As a cool-down of sorts, go to Java Jazz Hall at 10 p.m., where British jazz group Level 42 will play their groovy and slow-tempo tunes.
To close the night, Indonesian crooner Glenn Fredly will lead a sing-along with some of his most popular lovelorn songs at the BNI Hall stage at 11 p.m. Around the same time, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club will also bring the dancehall vibe of Havana to TEBS Hall. Whether you opt to have a tear-jerking karaoke session or dance the night away à la Cubans, anything is possible tonight.
