Flights at Yogyakarta Airport Back to Normal Amid Recovery of Garuda Jet
Jakarta. The recovery of an aircraft belonging to national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is underway at Adisutjipto International Airport in Yogyakarta after it skidded off a runway on Wednesday evening (01/02).
Benny S. Butarbutar, vice president for corporate communication at Garuda Indonesia, said the evacuation of the aircraft was hampered by technical problems on Thursday.
"However, the evacuation is still on the track and within target," Benny said in a statement received by the Jakarta Globe.
"All Garuda Indonesia flights to and from Yogyakarta are back to normal this evening," he added.
The incident occurred at around 07.30 p.m. on Wednesday when the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, originating from Jakarta with 123 passengers on board, attempted land during poor weather conditions.
Nobody was injured in the incident and the extent of the damage to the aircraft is not yet known.
At least 34 flights to and from Yogyakarta had to be diverted to Adisumarmo International Airport in Solo, Central Java.
Garuda Indonesia apologized to all stakeholders and passengers for the inconvenience.
Benny said the airline will cooperate with the National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT), and the Transportation Ministry's Airworthiness and Aircraft Operations Directorate (DKUPPU) to determine the cause of the incident.
"We would also like to thank the Indonesian Air Force, National Search and Rescue Agency [Basarnas], state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura I, GMF AeroAsia [a Garuda Indonesia subsidiary] and Gapura Angkasa [a joint venture between Garuda Indonesia and Angkasa Pura I that provides ground-handling services for airlines] and other parties that are assisting us with the evacuation," Benny said.
