Jakarta. Jakarta's growing number of coffee aficionados are expected to flock to Kopi United, a festival at South Jakarta’s Blok M Square that will showcase a wide variety of single-origin Indonesian coffees — from Gayo in Aceh to Merauke in Papua — from Friday to Sunday, Feb. 2-4.
Coffee farmers, cafe and coffee factory owners and award-winning baristas are also expected to showcase their wares and coffee-making skills at the festival.
"Kopi United will have participants from various backgrounds, from coffee farmers to exporters," Ronald from Kokopi, a coffee co-op, said in a statement on Saturday.
Kokopi is one of the organizers of Kopi United.
The Jakarta Globe is a media partner of the event, and other sponsors include digital payment system OVO and ride-hailing service and mobile payment platform Grab, which also has a food delivery service called GrabFood.
Kopi United will provide visitors with all the information you need to know about Indonesian coffee, including its long history.
Coffee lovers who want to take the next step of learning how to make the perfect cup of flat white will also be able to join workshops taught by Jakarta's leading baristas.
The festival's official theme is "Time to work for Indonesian coffee," with a focus on promoting Indonesian coffee to the world.
This is why there will also be workshops on online and offline marketing of coffee products.
The venue, Blok M Square, a popular mall located right next door to the busy Blok M bus terminal will be turned into "a coffee mall" and an offline partner of online shop Tokopedia, Ronald said.
Kopi United has also earned the backing of several government institutions, including the Tourism Ministry.
"The last time Indonesia was the world’s number one coffee producer was in 1732. We all have to unite to try to reclaim that position," Ronald said.
According to data from the International Coffee Organization, Indonesia is now the world’s second largest coffee exporter after Brazil.
The Jakarta Globe, OVO and GrabFood are affiliated through Lippo Group.
