10,000 Protesters Expected at Anti-Ahok Rally on Tuesday
Jakarta. Thousands of protesters are expected to take part in yet another rally in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/02) to demand the suspension of Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, who is currently on trial for blasphemy.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said the Indonesian Muslim Forum (FUI) has given notice that an estimated 10,000 protesters will participate in the so-called 212 rally in front of the national legislative complex on Jalan Gatot Subroto in Senayan.
He declined to say how many personnel will be deployed to maintain order during the protest but added that the police will be backed up by members of the Indonesian Military (TNI).
Argo called on protesters to obey the law and maintain order during the rally to avoid conflict.
"The point is that they want to meet leaders of the House [of Representatives]. It is a common thing to do. However, the most important thing is that they obey the rules. They must disperse at 6 p.m. and not vandalize public facilities," Argo told reporters on Sunday.
The protest is scheduled to start at 7 a.m., police said.
