Anti-Ahok Protest Must Not Turn Violent: Jokowi
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called on protesters who plan to stage a massive rally in Jakarta on Friday (04/11) to refrain from violence and vandalism.
"To protest is a democratic right of every citizen. It is permitted to demonstrate, but do no damage and don't create havoc," Jokowi said at the Jakarta Convention Center on Monday morning.
Jokowi made the comments following reports the police had been given a "shoot on sight" order during the rally, which is expected to see thousands protesting against incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama for alleged defamation.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. M. Iriawan denied giving the order and said the police are not permitted to carry firearms, much less shoot anyone, while securing the protest.
Jokowi said the government must maintain public order, but it also respects the freedom of speech.
"I have ordered the officers to safeguard the rally professionally," he said.
The president added he will be in Indonesia on Friday when the protesters are slated to take the streets of Central Jakarta.
