Banjarmasin Officials Arrested for Alleged Bribery
Jakarta. A regional council speaker and the head of a city-owned enterprise in South Kalimantan were reportedly among five people arrested in an anti-bribery sting operation on Thursday night (14/09), a state anti-graft official said on Friday.
An official announcement about the operation has not been made, but the chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) confirmed the operation took place in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan.
"We arrested five people from the Banjarmasin legislative council, a city-owned enterprise and a private firm," Agus Rahardjo told reporters in Jakarta.
He declined to name the people arrested but it is believed they included Banjarmasin legislative council speaker Iwan Rusmali and the president director of Bandarmasih — a local water company, Muslih.
They were suspected of being implicated in a bribery case related to the deliberation of a bylaw at the Banjarmasin regional council. Agus stopped short of saying it outright, but he hinted KPK investigators had confiscated "a certain amount of money" during the sting operation.
He said the five people arrested were brought to the South Kalimantan Police headquarters for interrogation, and will later be taken to the KPK headquarters in Jakarta to see whether or not they will be charged with bribery.
