Banten Aims to Achieve Global Tourism Standard, Increase Competitive Edge
Jakarta. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya encouraged stakeholders in Indonesia's tourism industry to compete at the international level, as the ministry conducts workshop aimed at boosting competitive advantage.
In Banten, the workshop, which was held on April 20-22, focused on Tanjung Lesung's competitiveness in comparison to the 10 priority destinations in Indonesia.
"This workshop has been organized to increase awareness and understanding, in an effort to increase the national competitiveness index, especially in Banten," said Ganda Sumantri, head of national tourism market profile.
Ganda added that the efforts must be collectively pursued by local governments and actors in the tourism industry.
Ganda was referring to an index published biannually by the World Economic Forum, Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index, covering 14 pillars, which include safety and security, international openness and airport infrastructure.
"We must use a global standard so that we can compete at the international level," Arief said in a statement.
The workshop aims to help assist Banten in creating an action plan, which will help build the province's tourism portfolio and create its own branding.
The workshop will continue to Tanjung Kelayang, Lake Toba and Labuan Bajo, with participants from other tourism destinations across the archipelago in attendance to collaborate and exchange ideas to boost their competitive edge.
Eneng Nurcahyati, Banten province's head for culture and tourism, said Banten will continue to improve its destinations and expressed hope that the workshop will help the province in its efforts to market the area to potential tourists.
Tanjung Lesung is one of the ministry's "10 New Balis." Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi and Morotai in North Maluku are also on the list.
"Bali is one of the best destinations in the world, which is a pride for us. Hopefully, Banten will reach that level, and we can do this with our spirit. Hopefully, this workshop can help us plan our marketing strategy for the future," Eneng said.
