Jakarta. At least 47 people died and dozens were severely injured in an explosion at a fireworks warehouse on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital on Thursday morning (26/10), a police official said.
The warehouse, which belongs to Panca Buana Cahaya Sukses, is in Kosambi, a subdistrict of Tangerang, Banten.
"We brought 47 bodies to the Kramatjati police hospital in Jakarta," Jakarta Police spokesman Argo Yuwono told the Jakarta Globe by telephone.
"Many people died, it was a huge explosion," he said.
Police have cordoned off the scene of the fire and forensic investigators will start combing through the debris by Friday, once it has cooled off.
"According to witnesses, a sudden explosion blew off the roof," he said, adding that five people have been questioned so far.
An investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and the exact number of casualties is still ongoing.
Argo said the injured who suffered severe burns were taken to the nearby Tangerang, BUN and Mitra Husada hospitals.
Relatives of the victims have been requested to arrive at the Kramatjati hospital to identify the remains.
