Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has discharged Arcandra Tahar from his post as minister of energy and mineral resources with effect from Tuesday (16/08), State Secretary Pratikno announced during a press conference on Monday.
The announcement came after rumors circulated over the past two days that Arcandra holds United States citizenship, which under law automatically cancels his Indonesian citizenship.
Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan will stand in as interim energy minister until the president finds a permanent replacement for Arcandra, Pratikno said.
"Addressing questions from the public regarding the energy minister's citizenship and after gathering information from many sources, the president decided to discharge Arcandra from his post as minister with honor," Pratikno said.
However, Pratikno did not clarify Arcandra's citizenship status when he was inaugurated less than three weeks ago.
