Chinese Contingent Second Biggest at Asian Games
Jakarta. China sent more than 800 athletes to participate in this year's the Asian Games, making it the second-biggest contingent at the international multisports event.
The Chinese team comprises 859 athletes, who will participate in all of the Games' disciplines.
Indonesia, the host, is represented by 935 athletes.
In a meeting with China's deputy prime minister, Sun Chunlan, prior to the opening ceremony on Saturday (18/08), President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo expressed his appreciation for China's support.
"I am certain that participation of the Chinese contingent will help make this year's Asian Games even more successful," Jokowi said, as quoted in a statement issued by the Cabinet Secretariat.
This is the second time Indonesia hosts the Asian Games, also having done so in 1962. This year, more than 17,000 athletes and officials and around 150,000 supporters from across Asia will witness the games held in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra.
Until Sept. 2, the athletes will be competing in nearly 500 events in 40 sports disciplines.
