'Cikeas Coalition' Picks Agus Yudhoyono as Jakarta Governor Nominee
Jakarta. Four major political parties have agreed to pick Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono — former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's son — to run as governor in next year's Jakarta gubernatorial election, with Jakarta's current deputy governor for tourism and culture Sylviana Murni as his running mate.
The Democratic Party, the United Development Party (PPP), the National Awakening Party (PKB) and the National Mandate Party (PAN) made their decision after a series of meetings at the former president’s — also the Democratic Party chairman — residence in Cikeas, West Java, early Friday morning (23/09).
Some have now dubbed the coalition of parties as the "Cikeas Coalition," a breakaway group from the six-party "Kinship Coalition" which also included the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
"After a marathon meeting, we've unanimously agreed on Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Sylviana Murni as our picks for next year's Jakarta election," PAN’s chairman Zulkifli Hasan told the press.
"We will register the pair with the Jakarta Election Commission (KPUD) tonight (Friday) at 7.00 p.m.," Zulkifli said.
Sylviana had arrived in Cikeas at 2.15 a.m. ahead of the coalition's announcement.
She declined to comment when asked by the press why she had come to the meeting so late.
