Farmer Swallowed Whole by 7-Meter Python in West Sulawesi
Jakarta. A 25-year old farmer was swallowed whole by a 7-meter python in Salubiro, a village in the Korossa subdistrict in Central Mamuju, West Sulawesi, local media reported.
The farmer, identified as Akbar, had been missing since Sunday (26/03) when he was reportedly harvesting his oil palm crop, local news portal Tribun Timur said.
Akbar's families and other village residents went on a search for the young farmer and found a giant python with a bloated belly in an oil palm bush on Monday evening.
The residents cut open the reticulated python's belly slowly and found Akbar's dead body inside.
"The victim's body has now been sent back to his home for funeral," West Sulawesi Police spokesman Supt. Mashura told news portal detik.com.
The incident was the first of its kind that has ever been reported in the province, he added.
In November last year, a group of farmers had caught another 7-meter python which had been bothering residents in the same area, Mashura said.
Evi Ayu Arida, a reptile expert from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), suspected the victim must have attacked the python first since the giant snake usually does not target humans.
"Some people think all snakes are dangerous. They get shocked and scared, then try to catch or kill the snake. And then an accident like this happens," Evi told detik.com.
