Flights Ordered to Avoid Mount Sinabung's Danger Zone
Jakarta. Indonesian authorities have raised Mount Sinabung's volcano alert from orange to red, which means airplanes are no longer allowed to fly in the danger zone above its crater.
The announcement to raise the warning level was made by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation.
"Planes are not allowed to fly too close to Mount Sinabung, it's too dangerous," Sutopo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said in a statement.
On Monday (19/02) morning, Mt. Sinabung spewed ash and gas up to 5,000 meters into the sky. There were at least 10 ash clouds during the day. No casualty was reported.
Sutopo said the BPNB has given masks to people near the volcano and cleaned volcanic ashes from roads and houses in the area.
Authorities have also restricted activities in the mountain's danger zone on the ground, around 3 to 7 kilometers from the crater.
