Flooding Christens Newly Opened Terminal 3 Ultimate
Jakarta.Consumer rights group YLKI has slammed the Transport Ministry and state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II after flash flooding hit the arrival gate of the new Soekarno-Hatta Terminal 3 Ultimate on Sunday evening (14/08).
"It's an alarming case, it's devastating," Tulus Abadi, managing director of YLKI, said in a statement on Monday.
The foundation has called on the ministry and the airport operator to investigate the cause and conduct an audit on the airport's drainage system.
"YLKI wants the ministry and Angkasa Pura II to give the contractor a punishment as this is part of a serious negligence," he said.
Agus Haryadi, head of corporate secretary and legal at Angkasa Pura II, officially apologized for the incident in a separate statement, saying the situation is now "under control."
"Angkasa Pura II with the Terminal 3 contractor are evaluating and investigating the flooding incident to make sure its cause and to fix it later," Agus said.
State-construction firm Wijaya Karya (Wika) corporate secretary Suradi said it would build a canal to prevent flooding in the future, as reported by Antara on Monday. Wika is the leader of Kawahapejaya Indonesia consortium that build Terminal 3.
The long-awaited Terminal 3 Ultimate officially opened to the public earlier this month, after a string of delays.
Soekarno-Hatta, the busiest airport in the country, had been operating at far above its passenger capacity for years. The new terminal cost Rp 7.7 trillion ($587 million) and will handle about 25 million passengers a year.
