Former DPD Speaker Irman Gusman Sentenced to 4.5 Years in Bribery Case
Jakarta. The Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court on Monday (20/02) sentenced Irman Gusman, former speaker of the Regional Representative Council, to four years and six months in jail for his involvement in a bribery scandal in West Sumatra.
Judge Nawawi Pamulango said Irman was found guilty of receiving Rp 100 million ($7,500) from a company called Semesta Berjaya as kickback payment for doctoring the province's sugar import quota.
The prosecutors had originally demanded a sentence of seven years.
The court also banned Irman from participating in politics for three years after he completes his sentence and ordered him to pay Rp 200 million in fines or serve additional three months in jail.
Irman was arrested in a sting operation by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in Jakarta in September last year along with Semesta Berjaya director Xaveriandy Sutanto and his wife Memi.
Irman – who was dropped as DPD speaker in October last year – was found guilty of attempting to influence Djarot Kusumayakti, director of national logistics agency Bulog, to allocate the sugar import quota to Semesta Berjaya.
Irman and his lawyer are still considering whether to accept the verdict or file an appeal.
