Home Affairs Minister Urges Border Areas to Support Infrastructure Development
Jakarta. Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo has called on residents and regional administrations in border districts to continue supporting the central government in its efforts to develop infrastructure, despite the completion of several projects in those areas.
The government will focus on providing supporting elements to allow the completed infrastructure to support local economies.
"The regions should also pay attention to prioritized programs, such as [reducing] the mortality rate of pregnant mothers, child nutrition and agricultural matters. These should all be integrated," Tjahjo said in Jakarta on Wednesday (12/07).
"This year, we must ensure that every region produces benefits [for the people], especially in the social sector," he added.
Tjahjo said several facilities have been completed in border areas, such as military facilities in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara.
The government will continue to build more supporting facilities, including health clinics and hospitals.
Tjahjo said the presence of the military will not improve security in border areas, but also contribute to various social activities.
The minister expressed hope that all the planned developments will be completed by next year, so that it can help to make these areas more productive.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla previously said developments in border regions should not only be limited to the building of security outposts.
He said the government will have to seek ways to improve the welfare of the people.
