Jakarta. Hong Kong police have arrested an elderly woman for alleged assault and intimidation of her Indonesian domestic worker, an Indonesian Foreign Ministry official confirmed on Friday (02/03).
"Last night, the suspect, a 79-year-old grandmother, was arrested for assault and for making death threats," Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, citizen protection and legal aid director at the ministry, said in a text message.
He also confirmed that the suspect has been released on bail.
"Yes, the suspect has been released on bail for the time being, because [the Hong Kong] justice system allows it," Iqbal said.
A clip posted on Time News International's Facebook page on Wednesday night quickly went viral, sparking outrage among netizens and eventually leading to an investigation by the Hong Kong Police Force.
In the video, the Indonesian domestic helper – whom the Foreign Ministry has identified as Tri Wahyuni – is scolded, physically assaulted and threatened by her employer.
The three-minute clip has received more than 1 million views and is a shortened version of the original 12-minute clip Tri reportedly shared on a Facebook Live broadcast.
The Indonesian consulate general in Hong Kong is monitoring the case and will assist Tri throughout the process, Iqbal said.
"This morning [Tri] was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and has now been discharged," Iqbal said.
He added that she is currently staying at a shelter provided by her employment agency in Hong Kong.
