Indonesia Begins Training PNG Officials to Prepare for Next Year's APEC Summit
Jakarta. Security officials tasked to the Indonesian Embassy in Papua New Guinea, or PNG, on Monday (13/11) began training PNG authorities to prepare for the 2018 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, Summit in Port Moresby, a statement from the embassy said.
"The training is to show Indonesia’s commitment in assisting PNG to prepare for the 2018 APEC [Summit]," Ronald J.P Manik, Indonesian ambassador to PNG, said.
Barbara Age, secretary general of the PNG foreign ministry, and David Manning, PNG National Police Assistant Commissioner, attended the first day of training.
The training event, called the "Dispatch of Experts on Protocol and Security Conference Management for PNG, will be supervised by more than 30 officials and will last until Friday. Training lessons will be given to airport and liaison officers and will cover side events, administration arrangements and a simulation for airport arrivals.
Another session will provide additional training for PNG police officers to handle small-arms fire and will last until Dec. 1. It will focus on the use of light weapons and better analyzing potential security threats.
The training is part of a larger comprehensive partnership agreement the two countries signed in 2013.
Since 1999, Indonesia has facilitated 112 types of training in various fields for countries in the Pacific region.
