Indonesia Needs to Improve Sports Management: Ahok
Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama says there have been mistakes in Indonesia's sports management and that sports clubs should be strengthened.
Ahok expressed this view during a meeting with 902 Jakarta athletes who will compete in the 19th National Sports Week (PON XIX) in Bandung, West Java, from Sept. 17 to 29.
"If the system were correct, we would have been champions. It's been 71 years that we're a nation, but sports clubs here have been struggling economically [and their participation was] as if they were just pursuing their hobbies," he said on Wednesday (07/09).
In his opinion, the money obtained from sports should also go to the clubs, not just to the athletes they coach.
"Like in developed countries, sports clubs can produce adverts to pay athletes. Clubs should be strengthened as well, so that they can train more athletes, or even send them abroad," he said.
Ahok said he expects Jakarta's athletes to be the pride of the city during PON XIX.
"I hope Jakarta will be the major winner at PON, ahead of the 2018 Asian Games, which we're going to host," he said.
