Jakarta. Vice President Jusuf Kalla is set to attend the Kabul Process meeting in the Afghan capital as a guest of honor on Wednesday (28/02), where he will share Indonesia’s experience in peacebuilding operations.

"The vice president’s visit to Kabul is to fulfill President Ashraf Ghani’s invitation to attend as a guest of honor at the Kabul Process, which will be held on Feb. 28th," Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a video issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and seen by the Jakarta Globe.

The Kabul Process, which was first held in June 2017, is an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process aimed at establishing peace, security and stability in the country after decades of violence.

Jusuf was involved in Indonesia's peace process with Free Aceh Movement (GAM) during Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's presidency.

Both Jusuf and Susilo were involved in peace truces regarding religious conflicts in the eastern part of Indonesia's Central Sulawesi and Maluku during President Megawati Soekarnoputri's era.

According to Retno, Jusuf’s visit to Kabul will be utilized to further discuss Indonesia's and Afghanistan’s plans to hold an international ulemas, or clerics, conference.

"This is an event that’s been requested by President Ghani to Indonesia, and now we are able to organize it," Retno said.

However, both countries still need to carry out detailed and intensive discussions, she added.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had conveyed Indonesia’s readiness to hold the international ulemas conference during his meeting with the chief of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council, Karim Khalili, on Jan. 29.

"Indonesia is ready to host this event. It’s important for this meeting to be inclusive," Jokowi said, as quoted in a statement issued by the Cabinet Secretariat.

While in Kabul, the vice president is scheduled to meet with Ghani and the High Peace Council. He will also visit the Indonesian Islamic Center, according to Retno.
