Jokowi to Impose Heavy Penalties on Smugglers, Accomplices
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has instructed National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian and Attorney General H.M. Prasetyo to impose heavy penalties on persons convicted of smuggling and helping smugglers.
Jokowi said that law enforcement measures to tackle smuggling must be concrete, as illegal products that enter the Indonesian market not only damage the country's finances, but also threaten the future of local industries.
"I demand firmer, more consistent and severe measures to be applied," Jokowi said during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday (25/01).
The president requested a prevention system to be established in regions prone to contraband.
Each smuggling case should be processed, Jokowi said.
"Act firmly against officials involved in smuggling and those who facilitate it. The key [to tackle contraband] is in prevention, supervision and law enforcement. I want concrete actions," he added.
