Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo witnessed the success of the 2017 Jember Fashion Carnival in Jember, East Java, on Sunday (13/08).

Taking the theme of the "Wonderful Archipelago Carnival Indonesia," the Jember Fashion Carnival has become a trendsetter for carnivals in the archipelago after its 16 years of establishment.

This year’s event featured the characteristics of 10 regions in Indonesia, with a parade of costumes throughout a 1.5 kilometer runway, with thousands of spectators attending.

"The cultural carnival, initiated and facilitated by the Ministry of Tourism and Indonesian Carnival Association [Akari], has a goal to facilitate other regions in showcasing and developing their own regional events," the Tourism Ministry’s deputy for tourism development, Esthy Reko Astuti, said on Saturday (12/08).

One of the visitors, 46-year-old Suwardi, said his family joined him to watch the carnival.

"I took my family to see the unique carnival costumes, as well as create some things with the children," Suwardi said.

Another visitor, a Dutch-woman named Margaret, has said she never missed any carnivals since 2012 with her husband, Peter.

"We always watched this since 2012. This year is fantastic, as today, it is as if I have witnessed the glory of various regions in Indonesia," Margaret said.

Jember district deputy head Muqit Arief has also praised the carnival.

"I am pleased as JFC accommodates the local cultures in Indonesia, especially Jember region. In the future, we will increase the number and quality of accommodation and participants," Muqit said.

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya believes that Jokowi was satisfied with the grand carnival, with thousands of talents showcasing their special costumes.

"The event is successful. I believe Mr. President was satisfied and has a new idea on initiating tourism activities with such carnival," Arief said.

"The president has been supportive on the JFC, as he discussed various issues upon his arrival in Jember. He wants to hold the Indonesia Cultural Carnaval. It is similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro [Brazil]," he added.

The Indonesia Cultural Carnaval may become an annual event, as it would be prepared for the opening of Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta.
