Karimunjawa Islands Now Have 24-Hour Electricity
Jakarta. The Karimunjawa Islands, a popular tourist destination in Central Java, now have a 24-hour electricity following the installation of two 2.2-megawatt diesel-fueled powered power plants, an official at the state-run utility company said.
Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) installed the two power plants in May last year on two of the five inhabited islands.
The Karimunjawa archipelago consists of 27 islands, with Menjangan, Cemara Besar and Tanjung Gelam being the most popular with tourists.
"One of Central Java's primary tourist destinations is expected to further develop with the presence of the 24-hour electricity," PLN official Hardian Sakti Laksana said in a statement.
Electricity consumption in the Karimunjawa Islands recently increased by up to 9 percent, compared with the national average of 6.5 percent.
