KPK to Meet With Police Chief Over Prolonged Investigation Into Acid Attack
Jakarta. Antigraft commissioners will soon meet with National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian to discuss a prolonged probe into the acid attack on senior investigator Novel Baswedan.
This will be yet another coordination meeting between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and police regarding the investigation, which was commenced more than two months ago by the Jakarta Police, and so far has not identified any suspect, despite public pressure.
"We'll invite not only the Jakarta Police officials, but also the National Police chief," KPK chairman Agus Rahardjo said at his office in Jakarta on Thursday (15/06).
Jakarta Police officials came to the KPK headquarters last month for a coordination meeting on the investigation in which dozens of witnesses have already been questioned.
"It's better if the National Police backs up the Jakarta Police," Agus said.
Members of the public have been calling for the establishment of an independent team, or a presidential team, to investigate the incident, in which two men threw acid on Novel's face near his home in South Jakarta.
Novel had to be immediately flown to Singapore for treatment, and last month underwent eye surgery.
Novel was investigating a high-profile corruption case surrounding the procurement of electronic identity cards (e-KTP), in which dozens of top government officials and lawmakers have allegedly been implicated.
