LIPI Launches Foresight on Maritime Research
Jakarta. The Indonesian Institute of Sciences, or LIPI, on Monday (18/12) launched its foresight on the condition and potential of maritime research in 2020-35.
The study is part of the Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Management Program-Coral Triangle Initiative (Coremap-CTI) Project to strengthen the institutional capacity in coastal ecosystems monitoring and research in Indonesia. The project, which started in 2014, is funded by the World Bank until 2020.
"The foresight is designed to assist researchers and relevant stakeholders in identifying opportunities and problems in the marine sector," LIPI Oceanography Research Center director Dirhamsyah said in Jakarta.
He said it will also contribute to the country's commitment to have 20 million hectares as marine conservation areas.
"Data and information related to the status of coral reefs is important [for the conservation efforts]."
LIPI also plans to build national data centers on coastal ecosystems in several provinces.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's administration wants Indonesia to become a maritime power by 2045.
