Magnitude-6.5 Quake Strikes Lombok
Jakarta. A magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara on Sunday morning (19/08), causing landslides and damage to infrastructure, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, or BNPB, said.
No casualties have been reported, BNPB spokesman Sutopo Nugroho said.
"The earthquake was felt strong in East Lombok. It caused landslides in several spots on Mount Rinjani, including Pegangsingan and Anak Dara hills in Sembalun. Several houses in East Lombok were damaged," he said in a statement.
Two earthquakes measuring 6.8 and 7.0 on the Richter scale struck off the north coast of Lombok on Aug. 5, killing 460 people and resulting in Rp. 7.5 trillion ($513.3 billion) loses.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) categorized Sunday's quake as another aftershock of the Aug.5 quakes.
More than 700 aftershocks have been recorded.
BNPB is drafting a rehabilitation and reconstruction plan for Lombok, which may require even Rp. 10 trillion. Most of the funds will come from the state budget, Sutopo said on Friday.
"The principle of rehabilitation and reconstruction is [to rebuild everything] better and safer," he said. These works will focus on housing, infrastructure and investment in the region's productive economy.
