Mount Sinabung Spews Ash in Powerful Eruption
Jakarta. Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra erupted on Monday (19/02) morning, sending a column of ash 5,000 meters into the sky, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, or PVMBG, said in a statement.
"The eruption was followed by a series of 10 hot ash clouds, which traveled 4.9 kilometers southeast and 3.5 kilometers east-southeast," PVMBG said.
According to the center, the volcanic material will fall on nearby settlements around midday.
Kutarayat and Karo subdistricts, especially the villages of Tiganderket, Selandi Lama, Selandi Baru, Perbaji, Payung and Munte, may suffer the most.
Rescuers are evacuating residents from the danger zone.
No casualties have been reported.
