Jakarta. Palembang, South Sumatra's capital and co-host with Jakarta for the 2018 Asian Games, will repaint houses in some of its hamlets in a rainbow of colors for the Games, creating "rainbow villages" reminiscent of Randusari in Java that rose to worldwide fame on Instagram earlier this year.

The city administration said the marketing campaign will be called Kampoeng Warno-Warni (Colorful Villages) and will involve corporations and local communities.

Paint company Cat Propan said it will donate hundreds of kilograms of paint for the early stage of the campaign.

"Kampoeng Warno-Warni is an initiative to make the Asian Games even more alive," Mas Warto, the secretary of a volunteer group called Gemilang Peduli Asian Games that came up with the idea for the program, said in a statement on Saturday (27/05).

Warto did not mention how many hamlets in the city will get the rainbow repaint job.

The program was inspired by Instagram sensation Kampung Pelangi, or Rainbow Village, the new nickname for Randusari in Semarang, Central Java.

Other villages in Yogyakarta and Malang in East Java have already followed in Randusari's footsteps.

The 2018 Asian Games is scheduled to take place from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2, 2018, in Palembang and Jakarta.

Palembang city administration has already announced it will also renovate historical buildings in the city for the Games, including the Kuto Besak fortress, and tidy up tourist areas around the famous Musi River.
