Passenger Boat Capsizes in North Kalimantan, Killing Eight

Jakarta. A boat capsized on the Sesayap River, North Kalimantan, on Monday (01/01) morning, killing eight passengers.

Forty-three people were rescued, the injured are hospitalized.

The Anugrah Express boat capsized 200 meters off the Tanjung Selor port on its way to the province's capital of Tarakan, Transportation Ministry's coast guard head Capt. Jhonny Silalahi said in a statement.

When the accident took place, 43 people were officially on board, but the actual number might have been different. A rescue operations continues.

"When the accident happened, the weather conditions in the area of the Sesayap River were reportedly normal," Jhonny stated.

The cause of the accident remains unknown. The ministry's transportation safety unit will investigate it in line with standard procedures.

The accident took place amid the ministry's efforts to ensure zero-accident services.
