Jakarta. Throughout the month of May, the beauty of East Java's Plengkung Beach in Banyuwangi is on display at the Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, in the Tourism Ministry's latest campaign to promote Indonesia abroad.
"We've picked surfing as the theme to attract young, active travelers from Amsterdam," Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said in a statement.
Plengkung, also known as G-Land, is a beach popular among European tourists. It is known for its magnificent waves, which can even reach six meters.
"G-Land is one of the most popular surfing spots in Indonesia ... Whenever an opportunity arises, we will promote this destination, just like we are doing now in Amsterdam," said Noviendi Makalam, the ministry's tourism marketing specialist.
As one of the busiest airports, Schiphol is a strategic location to attract foreign tourists to Indonesia.
"Schiphol is not only an entry point to the Netherlands, but also one of the main entry points of Europe," Noviendi added.
According to Arief, promoting G-Land in Amsterdam will not end with the display, which is only a starting point for social media campaigns.
Photographs promoting "Wonderful Indonesia" – the country's official tourism marketing campaign – are also on display at the famous Times Square intersection in New York.
