Police and AGO Delve Deeper Into Treason Plot Investigation
Jakarta. Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. M. Iriawan said police investigators are delving deeper into an alleged plot to topple the government reportedly planned by a group of activists whom the police arrested just hours before a massive street rally against Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama on Dec. 2.
The police said they have now enlisted the help of the Attorney General’s Office, or AGO, to assist them in the investigation.
"We're continuing the investigation, assisted by the AGO," Iriawan said on Thursday (22/12).
Iriawan denied the police had made a mistake in arresting writer and activist Ratna Sarumpaet, claiming they have evidence of her involvement in the plot.
"She can deny [her involvement], but we have the evidence. The police will not take any action without evidence. We have audio recordings, we have witnesses," Iriawan said.
Another suspect, politician Sri Bintang Pamungkas, said he will report his arrest to the International Parliamentary Union.
The police said they will not stop Sri Bintang from making the report. "We've arrested him because we had reasons to believe he was involved [in the plot]. He can report [his arrest] to whomever he pleases," Iriawan said.
The police chief said investigators will keep Sri Bintang in detention for the time being.
The police arrested 11 high-profile activists on Dec. 2 for allegedly plotting a coup against the Jokowi administration. Among them were rock star Ahmad Dhani, former military generals Kivlan Zein and Adityawarman, theater director and activist Ratna Sarumpaet, former President Suharto loyalist Virza Husein, politician Eko Suryo and activists Alvinindra Al Fariz and Rachmawati Sukarnoputri – the youngest daughter of former President Sukarno.
However, the police decided to release them following intensive questioning.
The remaining three, Jamran, Rizal Kobar and Sri Bintang Pamungkas, were detained and charged with violating the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law for inciting dissent on social media.
