Police and KPK Meet to Coordinate Acid Attack Investigation
Jakarta. Police investigators met with commissioners of the national antigraft agency in Jakarta on Friday (19/05) to coordinate their probe into last month's brazen acid attack on senior anti-corruption investigator Novel Baswedan.
Police have yet to identify the perpetrators of the attack, which activists have described as a form of terrorism against the country's efforts to eradicate rampant corruption.
Investigators have so far questioned around 20 witnesses amid mounting public pressure.
The police investigators visited the headquarters of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Friday to discuss the latest developments in their probe, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said.
"We're coordinating it in connection with our handling of Novel Baswedan's case. Our general crimes director and his staff are present to explain it to the KPK commissioners," Argo said.
However, he declined to comment on how the investigation is proceeding.
Activists have been pushing for the establishment of an independent team or a presidential team to investigate the case.
Novel sustained severe injuries to his eyes in the attack, which took place near his home in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on April 11. He was taken to Singapore for medical treatment shortly after the attack and he underwent eye surgery on Thursday.
The attack occurred while Novel led an investigation into graft involved in the procurement of electronic identity cards, in which dozens of top government officials and lawmakers have been implicated.
