Police Conclude Questioning of Suspect in Acid Attack on KPK Investigator
Jakarta. Police have concluded the questioning of a suspect allegedly involved in last month's acid attack on Novel Baswedan, a senior investigator at the Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK.
However, police did not detain the suspect, only identified by the initials A.L., as they still need more evidence.
"It is already 24 hours. Our team is crosschecking his alibi. We did not detain him, but we will still bring him along to check his alibi. He said he was home, at his neighbor's place," Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said in Jakarta on Thursday (11/05).
"We cannot question [anyone] from morning until the next morning, it is against human rights [regulations]. We have to afford them their rights. So, the person is currently with investigators to follow up on his statements," Argo said.
He said the suspect denied having been in the area during the attack.
"On the 11th [of April], [he was] at home during his off day [from work]. He spoke with his relatives and neighbors. Before that, he was at home. Well, we will check with everyone at his home," Argo said.
Argo said police will follow up on information provided by Novel's neighbor, who claimed that he saw a person similar in description to A.L.
"Investigators will check the person's whereabouts. Whether he was at home or not. We will check with the information technology officers and other experts on his whereabouts," he said.
Previous reports stated that police arrested the suspect in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, on Tuesday on suspicion that he was one of the perpetrators in the attack on Novel.
On April 26, police also detained two people believed to have valuable information regarding the attack.
Novel suffered serious burns to his face when an unknown assailant threw acid on him near his home in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.
