Police Say Images of Duplicated ID Cards on Social Media Are Part of a Hoax
Jakarta. Police have confirmed that images of duplicated identity cards, or KTP, that went viral on social media ahead of next week's gubernatorial election, were part of a hoax.
Investigators have looked at the ID cards, shown in social media posts, which have similar photos but different personal details.
North Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. M. Awal Chairuddin said investigators have verified that two of three ID cards, with identical photos, belong to two different people.
"We are currently investigating the person who first uploaded the hoax [images of the] duplicated ID cards on social media," Awal said on Monday (06/02).
He said data on the ID cards, starting from the names, identification numbers and addresses, are correct but that the photos had been edited to show the pictures of only one person.
"Our investigation found that the identities of the two persons are correct, but they are different individuals, not similar to those shown on social media. Next, we will find the identity of the perpetrator who spread this hoax," Awal said.
Sukarno, a 55-year-old resident of Pademangan VII in North Jakarta, and Mada, who resides in North Jakarta's Pademangan subdistrict, were present at the case exposé.
"I do not understand why the copy of my ID card posted on social media has a different photo, while I never gave my card to anyone," Mada said.
Sukarno also noted that there were differences in the details on the edited version of his ID card, which states that he is a businessman, while in reality he is a retired member of the military.
He said the signature on the social media copy is also different from that on the real ID card he has in his possession.
The issue of duplicated ID cards regularly surfaces during elections, as it is deemed to benefit some candidates or enable some parties to cast so-called ghost votes.
