Jakarta. National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said on Friday (29/12) that police across the country executed more than 50 drug offenders, including nine foreigners, and recorded a significant increase of narcotics seizures in 2017.

Data from the police showed that the number of drug cases and suspects decreased by 5 percent and 6 percent, respectively.

Throughout the year, 55 drug offenders were shot dead for resisting arrest.

"The decision to shoot them dead had been taken because the drug offenders were resisting when the police tried to arrest them," Tito during a press conference at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta.

In July, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo instructed law enforcement officers to shoot drug traffickers as part of an effort to tackle what he considered a "narcotics emergency" facing the country.

Tito also noted that while the number of cases and suspects has gone down, police also recorded an increase in the number of drugs it seized this year.

In 2017, the police seized 150 tons of marijuana, 2.69 million ecstasy pills and 2.55 tons of crystal methamphetamine, or shabu.
