President Approves Transfer of Terrorism Convict Abu Bakar Baasyir to Hospital
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Thursday (01/03) approved on humanitarian grounds the transfer of convicted terrorist Abu Bakar Baasyir from the Gunung Sindor prison in Bogor, West Java, to a hospital in Jakarta.
Baasyir, 79, was taken to the Cipto Mangunkusumo state hospital in Central Jakarta under the guard of the National Police's counterterrorism unit, Densus 88.
"This is because of humanitarian reasons, others [would be treated] the same," the president said, as quoted on the Cabinet Secretariat's website.
Baasyir is the spiritual leader of Al Qaeda-affiliated Jemaah Islamiyah, which is responsible for the 2002 bombings that killed more than 200 people in Bali. He also founded terrorist group Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
In 2011, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for funding a paramilitary training in Aceh.
