Jakarta. Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil, who recently announced his candidacy in next year's West Java gubernatorial election, said he has yet to pick a running mate and that he will leave the matter to those political parties that decide to back him.
Ridwan received an endorsement from the National Democratic Party (NasDem), which has only 5 percent of the seats in the West Java Legislative Council.
However, to meet the requirements, he must secure the support of political parties with a combined total of at least 20 percent of the seats in the council, or which received at least 25 percent of the popular vote in the 2014 election.
Ridwan said on Sunday (19/03) that his running mate will be decided by a coalition of the parties that decide to back him.
"I've yet to think about my running mate," he said at the Lautan Api Monument in Bandung, as reported by state-run news agency Antara.
"Unless the backing political parties agree to leave the choice of running mate to me, I won't pick them. I approached a political party and it requested that I pick a running mate from a certain party. Thank God, NasDem supports me without any conditions," Ridwan said.
He said he will also continue political communication with other parties to gain support for his candidacy.
