Sarinah Terror Attack Victims Still Waiting for Full Compensation: ICJR
Jakarta. Victims of the Sarinah terrorist attack have yet to receive full compensation, a year after the incident in Jalan Thamrin, Central Jakarta, which resulted in the death and injury of several civilians.
Claims of up to Rp 1.3 billion ($97,000), which were filed by the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK), have yet to be paid out.
"Most of the Thamrin victims have received medical assistance, with psychological and psychosocial assistance facilitated by the state. However, the court ignored the victims' right to compensation," Eddyono Supriyadi Widodo, executive director of the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR), said in Jakarta on Saturday (14/01).
He added that restitution rights, or the right for compensation for injury or loss, were impossible to be granted when nobody is taking the responsibility to pay.
"The law enforcers are less serious and the court deliberately ignored requests for compensation," Supriyadi said.
According to ICJR, the government should be responsive towards the victims and should have learned from previous acts of terrorism, as this would enable it to respect the victims' rights.
"Victims of terrorist attacks should receive restitution, or compensation by the state, medical assistance and psychological and psychosocial rehabilitation for trauma," he explained.
"Victims should also have procedural rights, and have the right to obtain information and documentation related to the judicial process."
He implored the government to respect the victims' rights and to continuously assist them to ensure that they recover from the incident.
