Denpasar. Police will deploy more than 1,300 officers to safeguard celebrations of Nyepi, or the Day of Silence, in Bali on Tuesday (28/03), citing security concerns related to a parade that will take place as part of the festivities.

Balinese Hindus will parade and burn giant effigies of demons in villages on the island on the eve of the holy day in a celebration known as Ngrupuk. More than 1,000 effigies will be on display, police say.

Security will be stepped up at more than 30 locations expected to draw large crowds during the holiday celebrations.

"We've mapped different areas ahead of Nyepi," Denpasar Police chief Sr. Comr. Hadi Purnomo said on Friday. He added that disruptions occurred during last year's parade.

His office will deploy 1,320 officers, which will be assisted by Bali's traditional security guards, known as pecalang, and members of the Indonesian Military (TNI), Hadi said.

Balinese Hindus typically refrain from using any electricity or fire and stay indoors for a day of reflection during the holy day. According to Balinese customs, pecalang will patrol the island to ensure that there are no outdoor activities during the day.

Ngurah Rai International Airport will close for 24 hours during Nyepi. Airport operator Angkasa Pura I said 324 domestic and international flights heading to and from Bali will experience delays.

Airport operations are expected to resume at 6.01 a.m. local time on March 29.
