Sustainable Tourism in the Spotlight of Upcoming Conference
Jakarta. Efforts to promote and develop sustainable tourism will be highlighted at the 6th International Conference on Tourism Statistics in June, during which leaders of the international tourism industry will discuss policy initiatives and improvements in measuring and tracking its progress.
The Ministry of Tourism said in a statement that a focus group discussion on sustainable tourism statistics was organized on Wednesday (10/05) in preparation for the conference.
"We organized this discussion to prepare Indonesia's recommendations for the conference ... Tourism plays an important role in sustainable development," the head of sustainable tourism development working group at the ministry, I Gede Ardika, said.
The conference in Manila on June 21-24 is expected to produce a declaration on the importance of developing a statistical framework to integrate sustainable tourism on the global, national and regional levels.
Ardika expressed his hopes that the focus group discussion will contribute to establishing a methodology to measure sustainable tourism to support tourism-related policy-making.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defines sustainable tourism as tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.
