Two More Suspects Named in Assault of Teen Facebooker
Jakarta. Police have named two more suspects in the alleged assault of a teenager in East Jakarta by a mob claiming he insulted Islamist cleric and suspect in pornography case Rizieq Shihab — currently on the run from police.
Investigators have not arrested the two men but said on Wednesday (07/06) they have collected enough evidence to name them — identified by their initials "S" and "E" — as suspects.
"We have enough evidence to charge them with assault," Pol. Supt. Hendy Kurniawan of the Jakarta Police said.
Hendy said the suspects' exact involvement in the alleged assault of 15-year-old Putra Alexander still has to be verified after they are arrested.
A mob, allegedly members of the hardline group Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), reportedly stormed Putra's house in Jatinegara late last month and took him to a nearby community center where he was hit in the face and head and forced to sign an apology letter for insulting FPI cleric Rizieq on Facebook.
A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media and led to widespread condemnation of mob justice.
Police late last week arrested two people identified as 22-year-old Abdul Majid and 57-year-old Mat Husin for allegedly striking Putra — an ethnic Chinese — in the face and head.
