West Sumatra's Solok Declares State of Emergency, Further Flooding Possible
Solok. The administration of Solok in West Sumatra has declared a state of emergency in response to flooding that began on Thursday (05/01), an official said.
Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Dasril told Antara news agency on Saturday the state of emergency was announced for the next 20 days in the subdistricts of Pantai Cermin, Kubung, Lembah Gumanti, Gunung Talang and Junjung Siriah.
Hundreds of households have been inundated by the overflow of the Batang Gawang and Batang Lembang rivers.
Pantai Cermin subdistrict is the worst affected, Dasril said, adding the agency is putting extra effort into helping local residents.
He also called on Solok residents to be on alert as further flooding and landslides may possibly follow.
As torrential rains have been hitting the district since Thursday, the BPBD has also warned against the increased water level of Singkarak Lake.
No fatalities have been reported.
