Young Golkar Politician Convicted of Graft and Sentenced to Four Years in Prison
Jakarta. A court sentenced young Golkar party politician Fahd El Fouz on Thursday (28/09) to four years in prison for bribery related to the government's procurement of the Koran and computer laboratories.
Fahd, found guilty of having accepted Rp 3.4 billion ($251,000) in bribes over the 2011-12 projects, was also ordered to pay a fine of Rp 200 million or serve another three months in prison.
"Defendant Fahd El Fouz has convincingly been proven to have committed corruption collectively," presiding judge Haryono said at the Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court.
That sentence, however, was lighter than the prison term of five years and Rp 250 million fine demanded by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors.
The court noted that Fahd paid back the total Rp 3.4 million in bribes to the state through the KPK.
"I pleaded guilty from the very beginning and am ready to face further legal process," Fahd said before the panel of judges.
He accepted bribes from businessman Abdul Kadir Alaydrus to have the latter's companies carry out the Rp 31.2 billion procurement of computer laboratories for senior Islamic high schools, and the Rp 72 billion procurement of the Koran at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Fahd accepted a total of Rp 14 billion in bribes alongside Zulkarnaen Djabar, a former member of a House of Representatives commission overseeing religious affairs, and his son Dendy Prasetya.
Zulkarnaen, also a Golkar politician, was sentenced in 2013 to 15 years in prison and fined Rp 300 million. Dendy was sentenced to eight years in prison and also fined Rp 300 million.
