BMX Rider Toni Stopped in Quarterfinals After Serious Injury
Jakarta. Toni Syarifudin, the last remaining Indonesian athlete in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, was forced out of the BMX quarterfinals after suffering a broken shoulder during the competition on Thursday (18/08), local time.
Toni, who was in fifth place in the first heat with a record time of 45.3 seconds, unfortunately finished last in the second heat after crashing and injuring himself.
He was treated by the Indonesian team doctor and will return home on Saturday to undergo medical treatment.
"The X-rays show that Toni dislocated his shoulder and tore a ligament," Indonesian Cycling Federation (ISSI) vice chairman Harry Warganegara Harun told the Jakarta Globe on Friday.
"[Toni] is in good condition now as we are going to examine him further with an MRI [Magnetic Resonance Imaging] machine. Our team doctor is ready to treat him, so he will go back to Jakarta tomorrow," Harry said.
Toni was Indonesia's only competitor in cycling at this year's Games. He was also Southeast Asia's only BMX athlete at this year's Olympics.
The cyclist has won several national championships and an international championship in Thailand in 2008. He was awarded a scholarship by the International Cycling Union to train at the World Cycling Center in 2014.
He had said Indonesia does not have a Supercross track such as in Brazil, so he went to the United States for intensive training before competing in the Olympics.
